The T26E3 was the experimental designation for what became the M26 Pershing, the United States' first operational heavy tank. In January 1945, twenty T26E3 tanks were shipped to Antwerp for combat testing on the European front, issued to the 3rd and 9th Armored Divisions in the operation known as the Zebra Mission, where they faced German Panther and Tiger tanks. Armed with a 90 mm M3 main gun, the type was soon standardized as the Heavy Tank M26 and named "General Pershing."
