The Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor is the USAF's premier air superiority fighter, combining fifth-generation stealth, supercruise capability, and highly integrated avionics in a single airframe. Developed under the Advanced Tactical Fighter programme and entering operational service in 2005, it was designed to counter next-generation Soviet fighter threats that ultimately never materialised, but remains the most capable air dominance aircraft in service. Production was capped at 187 aircraft due to cost and the changed threat environment following the Cold War.
