The Buffalo Mine Protected Clearance Vehicle traces its lineage to the South African Casspir, adapted into a 6x6 configuration by Force Protection Industries for the US military. Its defining feature is a remotely-operated articulated arm approximately 9 metres in length, used to uncover, detonate, or disarm IEDs and mines without exposing crew members. The Buffalo entered service in 2003 and saw intensive deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan, where it became the primary EOD route clearance vehicle for US Army and USMC units. France also fielded the type with its génie (engineer) units in Afghanistan under ISAF.
