The Rheinmetall 120 mm L/55 smoothbore is the longer barrelled development of the L/44 fitted to earlier Leopard 2 variants, extended by 1.3 metres to raise muzzle velocity and extend effective range. It was introduced on the Leopard 2A6, which entered German service in 2001, and the longer tube is the quickest way to tell a 2A6 from a 2A5 at a glance. Turned metal barrels give a truer taper and a clean bore mouth without seam cleanup.
