The de Havilland DH.100 Vampire was Britain’s second jet fighter. It first flew in 1943 and went on to serve with more than 30 air forces. The FB.5 was the fighter-bomber version, with clipped and strengthened wings and underwing hardpoints for bombs and rockets. France was a major Vampire operator. The Armée de l’Air flew British-built FB.5s alongside licence-built SNCASE versions. The Aéronavale also used them to train its first generation of naval jet pilots, including escadrille 57.S in its deep blue scheme. Canada flew Vampires too: the RCAF’s F.3s were its first operational jet fighters from 1948, and in 1951 No. 421 Squadron borrowed RAF FB.5s in England while it waited for its Sabres.
