Émile Dewoitine’s team at SNCAM designed the D.520 to a 1937 specification for a single-seat fighter. It was powered by a 12-cylinder Hispano-Suiza 12Y45 engine with a 20mm HS 404 cannon firing through the propeller hub, plus four 7.5mm wing machine guns. By the 1940 Armistice, 437 had been completed. With German permission, production restarted in Vichy France, and D.520s went on to serve with the Vichy air force, the Luftwaffe as fighter trainers, and the air forces of Italy, Romania and Bulgaria. Vichy aircraft were painted with bold red and yellow recognition stripes on the cowling and tail.
