The Spitfire Mk.VIII was the properly engineered Merlin 60-series Spitfire, with a strengthened fuselage, retractable tailwheel and enlarged fin, built for overseas theatres while the hastily converted Mk.IX carried the fight over Europe. It served in Italy, Burma and the Pacific, and Royal Australian Air Force squadrons flew it against the Japanese from bases in northern Australia and the islands. Box art shows A58-464 of the RAAF in the Southeast Asian theatre.
