The Mustang Mk III was the RAF designation for the Merlin-powered P-51B and P-51C, with around 900 examples delivered to the RAF and Allied air forces from late 1943. British modifications included the bulged Malcolm hood canopy for better all-round visibility, and the type proved outstanding as a long-range escort and fighter-bomber over Europe and Italy through 1944.
