I-1 and I-6 were both Junsen-type fleet submarines of the Imperial Japanese Navy, a class designed for long-range ocean operations. I-1 served as a supply submarine to isolated island garrisons in the Solomon Islands campaign before being sunk by New Zealand corvettes off Guadalcanal in January 1943. I-6 had a notably long and active career ranging from the Indian Ocean to the Aleutian Islands, surviving multiple engagements before being lost in 1944. Both submarines were armed with 14cm deck guns and torpedo tubes, typical of the Junsen class's dual surface and submerged attack capability. The tooling for this kit dates to 1973 as part of the original Water Line Series launch; kit 01512 is a 1994 rebox with revised parts.
