The 442 started life in 1964 as an Oldsmobile police package sold to the public, with the name spelling out the formula: four barrel carburettor, four speed manual and dual exhaust. By 1969 it had grown into a 400 cubic inch V8 rated at 350 horsepower, or 360 with the W-30 cold air package and its special camshaft, heavy duty rods and main bearings. What separated the 442 from the rest of the muscle car field was the chassis, since front and rear anti-roll bars, heavy duty springs and shocks meant it could handle corners as well as a quarter mile, which is why road testers of the day called it the best balanced performance car of the era.
