HMS Manxman was one of the six Abdiel-class fast minelayers built for the Royal Navy in the Second World War. She was laid down on March 24, 1939, and completed on June 20, 1941. Her geared turbines gave her a top speed of almost 40 knots, which made the class among the fastest warships of the war. That speed, together with her heavy anti-aircraft armament, made her ideal for dangerous solo missions, including running urgent supplies to besieged Malta. On one famous mission she was disguised as a Vichy French cruiser so she could lay mines off the Italian coast. She was torpedoed and badly damaged in 1942 but returned to service, and in the 1960s she was converted into a minesweeper support ship. This vintage Airfix kit, made in England, builds Manxman in her wartime configuration.
