The Bf 109E was the Luftwaffe's front line fighter through the Battle of Britain, and the E-3 was the version that fought that summer, with the Daimler-Benz DB 601 and wing mounted 20 mm cannon. It climbed and dived better than the Spitfire Mk.I but was hampered by short endurance over southern England, which is why so many ended up in the Channel. Willy Messerschmitt's design stayed in production to the end of the war, with nearly 34,000 built.
