The Spitfire PR.XIX was the ultimate unarmed photographic reconnaissance variant of the Supermarine Spitfire, combining the pressurised cockpit of the Mk.VIII with the Griffon engine and extended-range fuel tankage. Capable of operating above 40,000 feet, it was virtually untouchable by enemy interceptors and served with the RAF from 1944 through the end of the war and well beyond. The Swedish Air Force operated the type as the S 31, and PR.XIXs remained in RAF Meteorological Flight service into the late 1950s, making it one of the last piston-engined aircraft in British military use.
