HMS Ark Royal was a Royal Navy aircraft carrier, the third ship to bear the name, built by Cammell Laird at Birkenhead and launched in 1937. She was the first British carrier designed with her hangars and flight deck integral to the hull, and served in many of the war's most active theatres, including the Norwegian campaign, early U-boat actions, and Force H operations in the Mediterranean and on the Malta convoys. Her most famous moment came in May 1941, when Swordfish torpedo bombers from her decks crippled the steering of the German battleship Bismarck, allowing the Home Fleet to close in and sink her. Ark Royal was herself torpedoed by U-81 near Gibraltar on 13 November 1941 and sank the following day under tow, with the loss of just one crewman.
