Description
AIRA04003 - Airfix - 1/72 Supermarine Swift FR.5 - WWWEB10112668
Preowned, Original seal, Mint
The Supermarine Swift was the first swept wing jet fighter to enter Royal Air Force service, but its career as an interceptor was short and troubled, with handling and engine problems forcing the early marks out of the fighter role. The airframe found its calling in reconnaissance. The FR.5 combined a lengthened nose housing three cameras with a clipped wing, sawtooth leading edge and afterburning Avon, and it proved excellent in the low level tactical recce role over Germany. Flown by No.2 and No.79 Squadrons in RAF Germany from 1956 to 1961, Swifts won the NATO Royal Flush reconnaissance competition in both 1957 and 1959.
