Description
AIRA02105 - Airfix 1/72 Folland Gnat T.1 - WWHP113280
Preowned, Original seal, Mint
The Folland Gnat was conceived as a lightweight fighter at a time when frontline jets were growing steadily larger and more expensive, the idea being that a small, cheap and agile aeroplane could still do the job. The RAF took little interest in the fighter, but saw real promise in the two seat Gnat T.1 as an advanced jet trainer, and it entered service in that role from 1962. Tiny beside its contemporaries but quick and responsive, it became the mount of the Yellowjacks and then the Red Arrows, flying with the display team until the Hawk replaced it. The Gnat soldiered on in RAF training service until 1979 and is still remembered fondly by the pilots who flew it.
