HMS Nelson was a Royal Navy battleship, lead ship of the Nelson class alongside her sister HMS Rodney, built under the tonnage limits of the Washington Naval Treaty and commissioned in 1927. To pack the heaviest armament onto a treaty-limited hull, she carried all nine of her 16-inch main guns in three triple turrets mounted forward of the superstructure, a distinctive layout that allowed a shorter armoured citadel, with twelve 6-inch secondary guns in twin turrets aft. She served throughout the Second World War on Atlantic convoy duty, with Force H, and in the Mediterranean supporting the Sicily and Salerno landings, then provided shore bombardment off Normandy before later service in the Far East, and was scrapped after the war.
