The Spitfire Mk V entered service in early 1941. It paired the Mk I airframe with the more powerful Merlin 45 engine, and with more than 6,400 built between 1940 and 1943, it was the most numerous Spitfire mark. The VB carried the "B" wing armament of two 20mm cannon and four machine guns. Tropicalised Mk Vs, fitted with a Vokes air filter under the nose, flew in the defence of Malta and in the desert war.
