The Panavia Tornado was the product of a three nation programme between Britain, Germany and Italy, built around a swing wing airframe optimised for high speed penetration at low level. The RAF's GR4 upgrade, rolled out from the late 1990s, brought forward looking infrared, an updated cockpit with night vision compatibility, better navigation and the ability to carry precision weapons such as Storm Shadow and Brimstone. The GR4A was the reconnaissance variant with an internal sensor fit. Tornados flew RAF strike missions over Iraq, the Balkans, Afghanistan, Libya and Syria before the type finally retired from service in 2019.
