Description
AIR02061-1 - Airfix 1/72 F-86 D Sabre - WWHP111698
Preowned, Resealed, Mint inside, Box worn
The original 1975 issue of Airfix's F-86D, in the Series 2 box with the "NEW" starburst marking its first release — Made in England, Lesney-era packaging. A well-regarded tooling for its day, with cockpit and intake detail, optional-position airbrakes with well detail, a ventral rocket tray that can be shown extended or retracted, and drop tanks. Decals for two USAF Sabre Dogs: the shark-mouthed FU-845 of the 520th FIS (Geiger Field, 1955) and a 512th FIS machine at RAF Manston, 1956.
The F-86D "Sabre Dog" was the all-weather interceptor development of the Sabre, with a radar nose, afterburning engine, and an armament unique among its peers: no guns at all, just a retractable tray of 24 Mighty Mouse unguided rockets. It was built in greater numbers than any other Sabre variant, defending North American and NATO airspace through the 1950s.
