The Mk VB was the Spitfire that carried Fighter Command through 1941 and 1942, pairing the Merlin 45 with the B wing of two 20 mm Hispano cannon and four Browning machine guns. It was built in greater numbers than any other mark, flying from Britain, the Mediterranean, North Africa and Russia, and clipped wing and tropical versions adapted it to low level sweeps and desert conditions. Polish and American squadrons flew it as well, which is why the type turns up in so many different markings.
