The de Havilland DH.88 Comet was designed and built in less than a year for a single purpose: to win the 1934 MacRobertson Trophy Race from England to Australia. Three were entered, sleek wooden twins with slim cowlings around a pair of Gipsy Six engines, retractable undercarriage and a cramped tandem cockpit. G-ACSS "Grosvenor House", flown by C.W.A. Scott and Tom Campbell Black, left RAF Mildenhall on 20 October 1934 and reached Melbourne in just under 71 hours to take the prize. The aircraft survives today with the Shuttleworth Collection and the DH.88's aerodynamic thinking fed directly into the later Mosquito.
