The Sd.Kfz.251/22 was a late-war German improvisation, mounting the 75mm PaK 40 anti-tank gun on the standard Ausf.D halftrack hull to create a mobile tank destroyer. Introduced in 1944 as Allied armour pressure intensified on all fronts, it gave Panzergrenadier units an organic anti-tank capability that could keep pace with mechanised formations. The combination was a field expedient rather than an engineered solution, but it proved effective enough to remain in production through the end of the war.
