The North American P-51D Mustang was the definitive long-range escort fighter of the Second World War. Powered by the Packard-built Merlin V-1650, the D variant introduced the Malcom-style bubble canopy giving the pilot unobstructed all-round visibility, and carried six .50-calibre M2 Browning machine guns. Range extended by drop tanks allowed the P-51D to escort Eighth Air Force heavy bombers deep into Germany — a capability that transformed the strategic bombing campaign from late 1943 onward.
