Subject: Armour
German Panzer Grey (Dunkelgrau RAL 7021) — standard Wehrmacht vehicle color early WWII, approx. 1939–February 1943. Often paired with Dunkelbraun RAL 7017 (1939–1940), later used alone. Applied to: Panzer I Ausf. A/B; Panzer II Ausf. A–F, L (Luchs early); Panzer III Ausf. A–J; Panzer IV Ausf. A–F2; StuG III Ausf. A–F; Sd.Kfz. 221/222/223 armored cars; Sd.Kfz. 231/232/233 (8-rad); Sd.Kfz. 250/251 halftracks (early Ausf. A–C); Opel Blitz trucks; Kübelwagen; early Marder I/II conversions; early Wespe prototypes. Used in Poland (1939), France (1940), Balkans (1941), early Barbarossa (1941–42), North Africa (limited early deployments before desert repaint).
Used in:
Spanish Civil War 1936–1939
Legion Condor Armour — Panzergrau RAL 7021 primary hull
North Africa & Mediterranean 1940–1943
Deutsches Afrikakorps Armour — Panzergrau showing through worn sand repaint
Eastern Front 1941–1945
German Armour Early — Panzergrau RAL 7021 base
Complete this scheme with:
German Grey — Panzergrau Model Color variant
Neutral Grey — Highlight and colour modulation
White — Balkenkreuz and tactical number markings
Flat Brown — Mud and grime weathering
Weathering & modulation: Highlight with VLJ70992 Neutral Grey for colour modulation. Apply VLJ70983 Flat Brown thinned as a mud filter on lower hull.
Scale colour note: Lighten base coat 15% with VLJ70992 at 1:35, 20% at 1:72.
Application: Water-based acrylic. Thin with water for brush painting, or Vallejo Acrylic Thinner for airbrushing. Add a few drops of Vallejo Flow Improver to cut surface tension, improve levelling, slow tip dry, and allow water-based acrylics to spray like a lacquer or solvent-based paint. Aim for a milk-like consistency.
