The M113 was the US Army's ubiquitous armoured personnel carrier, an aluminium-hulled, fully tracked vehicle introduced in the 1960s and used in enormous numbers throughout the Vietnam War and beyond. The ACAV (Armored Cavalry Assault Vehicle) configuration added gun shields and extra machine guns — a commander's .50 calibre plus two side-mounted M60s — to turn the transport into a heavily armed fighting vehicle for cavalry and convoy-escort duties.
