The Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I was the RAF's principal single-seat fighter during the Battle of Britain in the summer of 1940, flying alongside the Hawker Hurricane against the massed formations of the German Luftwaffe. Designed by R.J. Mitchell and first flown in 1936, it was distinguished by its elliptical wing planform, Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, and exceptional handling qualities. Spitfire Mk.Is equipped squadrons across Fighter Command during the critical months of July to October 1940, including No. 610 (County of Chester) Squadron and No. 92 Squadron, both of which recorded significant victories during the campaign.
