The F-4EJ was a license-produced variant of the F-4E built by Mitsubishi for the Japan Air Self-Defence Force, with 140 aircraft delivered between 1971 and 1981. Adapted to Japanese requirements — including deletion of the nuclear delivery capability and in-flight refuelling system — the F-4EJ served as the JASDF's primary air defence fighter for two decades. Many were later upgraded to F-4EJ Kai standard with improved avionics and weapons systems.
