The late 1970s saw a surge in recreational off-road culture in North America, driven by the popularity of compact pickup trucks, all-terrain vehicles, and trailered weekend rigs. The Honda Odyssey — introduced in 1977 — was one of the first purpose-built recreational ATVs designed for open terrain rather than farm or utility use. The Ford Courier was Ford's compact pickup of the era, sold in the US from 1972 and built on a Mazda platform.
