The Arado Ar 240 was a twin-engine heavy fighter/reconnaissance aircraft that saw extremely limited operational use, with only a handful of pre-production A-series aircraft reaching the front line. Despite its troubled development — poor handling characteristics plagued the type from its first flight in June 1940 — the Ar 240's exceptional performance led several early examples to be stripped of armament and used as high-speed reconnaissance aircraft over England and the Eastern Front, where no other twin-engined type could operate with impunity. Only around twenty Ar 240s were completed in all variants before the programme was cancelled.
