Description
6025 - MPC 1/25 Lotus 56 Indy Turbine Car - WWHP112751
Preowned, Original seal, Mint
The Lotus 56 was one of the most radical cars ever entered at Indianapolis. Designed by Maurice Philippe under Colin Chapman's direction, it used a Pratt & Whitney gas turbine engine producing 500–600 hp, routed through a four-wheel-drive system in a distinctive wedge-shaped aluminium monocoque — an entirely different engineering philosophy from the Ford-powered roadsters and early rear-engine cars it faced. At the 1968 Indianapolis 500, Joe Leonard led with ease before his fuel control shaft failed eight laps from the finish; Graham Hill and Art Pollard also retired. USAC banned turbine and four-wheel-drive cars shortly after, ending one of the most intriguing chapters in Indy car history.
Kit 6025 is MPC's mid-1990s rebox of their original 1968 tooling, one of only a handful of plastic model kits to depict the Lotus 56. The kit includes a 1/25 scale Indianapolis pit tractor as a bonus item.
