The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 was one of the outstanding single-seat fighters of the Second World War, entering combat over the English Channel in 1941 where it immediately proved superior to the Spitfire Mk V. Powered by a BMW 801 twin-row radial engine, it was fast, well-armed, easy to maintain, and able to absorb heavy battle damage. Continual development through the A-5 to A-8 variants kept it competitive throughout the war.
