The Jagdpanther grew out of an early plan to mount the 8.8 cm Pak 43 L/71 on the Panther chassis, so it shares much of the tank's running gear and drivetrain while replacing the turret with a fixed casemate. That gun was near identical to the King Tiger's KwK 43, and 80 mm of sloped frontal armour gave better protection than the Tiger I's front plate. Production ran only about eighteen months under Allied bombing, and just over 400 were completed, most of them the Ausf. G1.
