The Spitfire Mk.V was the RAF's primary frontline fighter from early 1941 through mid-1942, serving in every theatre from the Battle of Britain follow-up operations to North Africa and Malta. The Vb variant introduced the B-type wing with two 20mm Hispano cannons and four .303 Browning machine guns, making it a significantly more capable platform than earlier marks. Over 6,400 Mk.Vs were built, making it the most numerous Spitfire variant of the war.
