Ernst Heinkel designed the B.I in 1914 as an observation and training machine, and its easy handling made it a mainstay of Austro-Hungarian flying schools rather than the German service. Around 408 were built under licence in Austria-Hungary across the 75, 76, 176, 276 and related series, with one and two seat versions and different engines. Production continued in Czechoslovakia after the war under Aero and Letov, where it was the most common trainer through the 1920s, and a surviving licence-built Aero A-1 is preserved at the Kbely aviation museum in Prague.
