The Crusader was one of the principal British cruiser tanks of the early Second World War, designed by Nuffield and best known for its service in the North African desert campaign, where its speed was respected even by the Afrika Korps. The Mk II (Tank, Cruiser, Mk VIA) carried thicker armour than the original Mk I while retaining the same 40mm 2-pounder main gun, and usually dispensed with the small auxiliary hull machine-gun turret. Fast and manoeuvrable but lightly armoured and under-gunned against German tanks and anti-tank guns, it nonetheless served as a mainstay of British armoured units in Libya and Egypt until newer types arrived. Over 5,000 Crusaders of all marks were built.
