The Saab JAS 39 Gripen was built to replace the Draken and Viggen in Swedish service, a single-engine canard delta designed around dispersed wartime operation from short public roads with short turnaround times and conscript ground crews. Its name covers all three roles it was meant to fill: fighter, attack and reconnaissance. Since entering service in 1996 it has been exported to the Czech Republic, Hungary and South Africa, all of which are covered in this boxing.
