Description
HAS02440 - Hasegawa 1/72 S2F-U Tracker Target Tow Plane
The Grumman S-2 Tracker (designated S2F prior to 1962) was the first purpose-built, single-airframe anti-submarine warfare aircraft to enter service with the United States Navy, combining detection and attack functions that had previously required two separate aircraft operating in hunter-killer pairs. The Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force received 60 S2F-1s from US stocks in 1957, operating them until 1984 under the nickname "Aotaka" (Blue Hawk). In 1970-71, four of Japan's S2F-1s were converted to target tug configuration and redesignated S2F-U, receiving new serials beginning with 9151. These S2F-U conversions were adapted for utility target-towing roles to support naval anti-aircraft fire training, operating with the JMSDF's 61st Air Corps in their distinctive engine grey, yellow, and dayglo red-orange colour scheme in place of the original ASW equipment.
This 2023 limited edition release from Hasegawa adds new resin and metal parts to the long-running S2F kit to accurately reproduce the target-towing equipment mounted under the fuselage, making it the definitive 1/72 representation of this rare JMSDF utility variant.
