The Panzer I was conceived as a training vehicle, but it was the tank Germany actually had in numbers when the war began, and its two machine guns and 13 mm of armour went to Poland and France anyway. The modified version of the Ausf. A addressed the chronic overheating of the Krupp M305 engine with a revised engine deck and enlarged air intake arrangement. Crews knew the type's limits, but it gave the new Panzer divisions the practical experience that shaped everything that followed.

• Newly tooled upper hull, engine deck and air intake cover specific to the modified version, with countersunk screw detail and turret weld seams
