The Marder II was a German tank destroyer built on the proven Panzer II chassis, mating it with the potent 7.5cm Pak 40 anti-tank gun to create a mobile counter to Soviet armour. Introduced in 1942, it gave Panzerjäger units a hard-hitting, if lightly protected, platform that served on all fronts through the rest of the war. Its open-topped fighting compartment traded crew protection for the firepower and mobility needed to engage tanks like the T-34.
