The appearance of the KV heavy and the T-34 in late 1941 forced a rapid German response, and the StuG III was one of the first vehicles to receive it. Delivery of the Ausf. F began in March 1942, essentially a modified Ausf. E fitted with the longer and far more effective 7.5 cm StuK 40 L/43, which turned the assault gun into a genuine tank killer. Frontal armour was increased to 80 mm during the production run, and the type went on to become one of the most heavily produced German armoured vehicles of the war.
