The Panzer IV/70 (A) was exactly what its nickname suggests, an interim solution. With Vomag unable to build the purpose-designed IV/70 (V) fast enough, Nibelungenwerk mounted the long 7.5 cm Pak 42 L/70 on a largely unaltered Panzer IV Ausf. J hull under a tall boxy superstructure, and roughly 278 were completed between August 1944 and March 1945. The result was badly nose-heavy, so steel-tyred front road wheels and Thoma wire mesh side screens were common sights in the final months of the war.
