During the Normandy landings of June 1944, British and Commonwealth troops, Royal Marines among them, came ashore with bicycles to move inland quickly once clear of the beaches. Folding and standard service bicycles were carried on the shoulder through the surf, letting men cover ground faster than they could on foot.
