The Fiat CR.42 Falco was Italy's primary fighter at the outbreak of the Second World War, and one of the last biplane fighters to see operational service in any air force. Despite being technologically outpaced by contemporary monoplanes, the CR.42 was exceptionally manoeuvrable and remained in front-line use with the Regia Aeronautica through 1941. Export versions served with the Belgian, Hungarian, and Swedish air forces, and captured examples were briefly evaluated by the Luftwaffe for night harassment duties.
