The 1961 Ranchero was Ford's most frugal utility vehicle, built on the compact Falcon rather than a full size chassis, with an 85 horsepower 144 cubic inch six that Ford advertised at 38.3 miles per gallon. For $1,887 a buyer got economy plus a six foot box with 31.5 cubic feet of load space, which was the whole pitch in a year when the horsepower race had briefly gone quiet. AMT's Custom boxing takes that mild mannered work truck the other direction entirely, pulling the six in favour of a 427 V8, adding a tonneau cover and custom wheels, and finishing it with a wild seventies street machine paint scheme.
