The Dornier Do 217 was the Luftwaffe's principal long-range bomber and anti-shipping aircraft of the mid-war period, a significantly enlarged and more powerful development of the earlier Do 17. The E-2 variant carried up to 4,000 kg of bombs internally and externally, and KG 40 operated the type extensively from French Atlantic bases against Allied convoys and Royal Navy vessels. Do 217s were also adapted to carry the Henschel Hs 293 radio-guided glide bomb, scoring the first successful guided missile attacks in history against Allied shipping in 1943. The type also saw service in night bombing raids over Britain.
