The Churchill AVRE (Armoured Vehicle Royal Engineers) was a British assault engineering tank developed after the Dieppe raid to clear obstacles and breach fortifications ahead of the infantry. It carried a 290mm Petard spigot mortar that fired a heavy demolition charge, nicknamed the "Flying Dustbin," able to destroy concrete bunkers and obstacles at close range. AVREs served with Hobart's 79th Armoured Division and saw action on the Normandy beaches in 1944.
