USS Indianapolis (CA-35) was a Portland-class heavy cruiser that served as flagship of the US Fifth Fleet through the Pacific campaign. After delivering components for the first atomic bomb to Tinian in July 1945, she was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-58 and sank in twelve minutes, resulting in one of the worst losses of life at sea in US Navy history. The I-58, equipped with kaiten manned suicide torpedoes, was among the IJN's late-war attack submarines.
