Subject: Aircraft
Imperial Japanese Navy/IJA Aotake protective translucent blue-green lacquer — used primarily on internal metal surfaces for corrosion protection rather than external camouflage, approx. 1935–1945. Applied variably (blue to turquoise depending on mix and oxidation). Found on: Mitsubishi A6M2, A6M3, A6M5 (Zero variants), Nakajima B5N1/B5N2 (Kate), Aichi D3A1/D3A2 (Val), Yokosuka D4Y1/D4Y2/D4Y3 (Judy), Mitsubishi G4M1/G4M2 (Betty), Kawanishi H8K1/H8K2 (Emily), Nakajima Ki-43-I/II/III (Oscar), Nakajima Ki-44-I/II (Tojo), Kawasaki Ki-61-I (Tony), Kawasaki Ki-45 (Nick), Mitsubishi Ki-46-II/III (Dinah), Tachikawa Ki-54 (Hickory), and interiors of IJN carrier aircraft operating in the Pacific War including Pearl Harbor (1941), Coral Sea (1942), Midway (1942), Guadalcanal (1942–43). Not an external combat camo but critical for accurate IJ interior finishes.
Used in:
Pacific Theatre — Imperial Japanese Navy & Army Air Force 1941–1945
IJN Carrier Aircraft Early War — Interior structural coating — wing spars, fuselage frames
IJN Carrier Aircraft Late War — Interior corrosion coating
IJA Fighters — Interior structural coating
Application: Water-based acrylic. Thin with water for brush painting, or Vallejo Acrylic Thinner for airbrushing. Add a few drops of Vallejo Flow Improver to cut surface tension, improve levelling, slow tip dry, and allow water-based acrylics to spray like a lacquer or solvent-based paint. Aim for a milk-like consistency.
