Subject: Aircraft
RAF Sky Type S (‘Duck Egg Green’; approx. BS 210 / FS 34424 range) — standard RAF underside color introduced mid-1940, approx. 1940–1945. Applied to: Supermarine Spitfire Mk.I/II/V, Hawker Hurricane Mk.I/II, Boulton Paul Defiant, Bristol Blenheim (fighter variants), Beaufighter Mk.I/VI (fighter schemes), Mosquito FB.VI, Typhoon Mk.IB (early), Tempest Mk.V (early). Also used for fuselage bands and spinner markings. Used in Battle of Britain (1940), Fighter Command operations (1940–1943), and early offensive sweeps over occupied Europe.
Used in:
Battle of Britain — July to October 1940
RAF Fighter Command — Underside Sky Type S — from August 1940
RAF Fighter Command — Underside from mid-1940
Complete this scheme with:
BS Dark Green — Upper surface partner
BS Dark Earth — Upper surface partner
White — Sky spinner and roundel white
Weathering & modulation: Sky undersides show exhaust and oil staining. Apply thinned VLJ70980 Black for exhaust streaks.
Scale colour note: At 1:72 lighten 5–10% maximum.
Application: Water-based acrylic. Thin with water for brush painting, or Vallejo Acrylic Thinner for airbrushing. Add a few drops of Vallejo Flow Improver to cut surface tension, improve levelling, slow tip dry, and allow water-based acrylics to spray like a lacquer or solvent-based paint. Aim for a milk-like consistency.
